Matiere Catchmet

Matiere Catchmet

The Matiere Catchment Group represents a significant and dynamic area located northeast of Taumarunui, situated on the northern border of the Whanganui Region Catchment Collective boundary. The catchment begins at the summit of the Hiwis, where streams descend through the Matiere township and continue toward Ohura. Rich in history, this area is now home to tourism initiatives such as Forgotten World Adventures, which utilizes carts to traverse the historic railway route that once served as a primary supply line between Stratford and Okahukura.

Formed in October 2023 by a dedicated group of farmers and community members, the Matiere Catchment Group is committed to enhancing the vitality of its remote community. With a strong vision, the group focuses on understanding the state of local waterways, fostering collaborative learning to improve environmental health, and sharing their inspiring stories of progress and success.

Since its establishment, the group has conducted monthly water sampling beginning in October 2023, demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship and the sustainability of the region's natural resources.
