The Retaruke Catchment Group was established in April 2022 by a dedicated collective of landowners committed to preserving their remote rural community and addressing the expanding threat of pine tree proliferation. Central to their mission is identifying and safeguarding the unique characteristics of this region. To support this work the group has been undertaking monthly water sampling since May 2022.
The Retaruke catchment encompasses the expansive Kaitieke and Retaruke Valleys, located southwest of Taumarunui. This area is characterised by its rugged, steep hill country, predominantly utilised for sheep and beef farming. Increasingly, the land is transitioning into exotic forestry, with the remaining balance comprising native forest. The group strives to strike a harmonious balance between these land uses while protecting the region's natural and cultural heritage.
