Enhancing Biodiversity

The Whanganui Region Catchment Collective is helping landowners and communities across the region take practical steps to protect and restore biodiversity. From hill country to headwaters, Whanganui Region Catchment Collective supports grassroots projects that reduce erosion, restore habitat, and protect native species like whio, kiwi, and tuna.

Recent projects include:

The Retaruke Trap Bank

Giving farmers, hapū, and the local school access to predator traps and expert training.

Expanded predator control in Upper Ongarue

Protecting whio habitat over 2 kms through community-led trapping and workshops.

Mānuka seedlings

18,000 mānuka seedlings were distributed to the community free of charge on 2023 to support and encourage native planting projects.

By combining local knowledge, expert advice, and strong community engagement, Whanganui Region Catchment Collective is making biodiversity protection doable and effective in working rural landscapes.
