Established in May 2024, the Tuhua Catchment Group was founded by local farm owners, hapū, and community members who share a unified vision of fostering a sustainable future for the land, rivers, and all who are intrinsically connected to them.
As part of their commitment to environmental stewardship, the group has undertaken monthly water sampling since its inception to enhance their understanding of the current state of local waterways. The Tuhua catchment area encompasses the Taringamotu and Pungapunga rivers, originating from the Tuhua Maunga and Pungapunga ranges. These rivers flow towards Taumarunui, eventually joining the mighty Whanganui River.
This catchment is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and serves as a vital hub of productivity, featuring highly fertile sheep and beef farmland, some dairy operations, and a mix of native and exotic forests in its headwaters. The Tuhua Catchment Group exemplifies a collective effort to balance agricultural productivity with environmental conservation.
