The Whakapapa Catchment was established in 2023 and spans from Raurimu in the south to Piriaka in the north, encompassing the Piopiotea, Kakahi, and Whakapapa river catchment areas. Framed by the majestic Central Plateau mountains of Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro, the region boasts breathtaking natural beauty.
The rivers within the Whakapapa catchment, characterised by their stony beds, have been the focus of monthly water sampling since February 2024. This initiative aims to enhance understanding of the waterways' health and identify measures to protect them effectively.
The catchment area is a hub of diversity, featuring fertile dairy land on the plateau, alongside sheep, beef, and deer farming. It also supports blueberry cultivation, a mix of native and exotic forests, and vibrant tourism activities. The catchment proudly includes the townships of Raurimu and Owhango, adding to its rich cultural and economic fabric.
