During the winter of 2020, farmers in Otunui initiated discussions about establishing a catchment group to address local environmental and community concerns. These initial conversations culminated in a well-attended meeting at the local hall, where the group was officially formed with three primary objectives: monitoring water quality, promoting education, and fostering a sense of community.
Since its inception, the group has conducted monthly water sampling, beginning in October 2020, to better understand and protect the region's waterways. The boundaries of the catchment group extend from Taumarunui to Tunnel Hill along State Highway 43, covering the true right side of the river and encompassing Kirikau, Te Maire, and the Kururau Basin.
The group regularly organizes events at venues such as Otunui Hall, Kirikau Hall, and the Pukenui Angus sale complex, serving as hubs for community engagement and collaboration. In recognition of its impactful contributions, the Taumarunui West Catchment Group received the prestigious 2025 BFEA Catchment Group Showcase Award, highlighting its dedication to environmental stewardship and community well-being.
