Building our Knowledge

At the Whanganui Region Catchment Collective, we believe better decisions start with better understanding. That’s why we support catchment groups with hands-on and accessible learning opportunities to grow knowledge and confidence around land and water care.

Our members are involved in monthly water quality monitoring, with over 80 sites now tested across the region. We also run stream health days, where farmers, school students, and community members learn to assess waterway condition using tools like macroinvertebrate surveys and stream health assessments.

Whanganui Region Catchment Collective regularly hosts workshops with expert speakers covering topics like wetland restoration, erosion control, freshwater regulations, and biodiversity protection. These events are designed to be practical, locally relevant, and inclusive—bringing together farmers, hapū, schools, and other rural voices.

By making science accessible and creating space for shared learning, Whanganui Region Catchment Collective is helping communities understand their catchments—and take action to care for them.
